The Poor
Mother Teresa: (Nobel Peace prize) "They are the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for, throughout society, people who have become a burden to society and are shunned by everyone." I would include the aliens (immigrants, refugees, foreigners), fatherless, orphans, widows, prisoners, prostitutes, and seniors. Marginal view: "The Reign of God is oppose to the reign of the ruler of the world, which is powerful structures seeking own profit. Instead it is a rule of love or sharing with the poor, alien, widows, oppressed, the powerless." I would say that the poor are the weak and the marginal who could not survive the competitive market. Jesus: "And whosoever gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I will say to you, he shall not loose his reward" (Matt 10:42). Jesus uses a child to symbolize the poor. He also includes the captives (addicts, prisoners, demonized), the oppressed (victims of evil social and economic injustice), and those who are blind (self-centered, insensitive to the needs of others and to the message of God.) Lk 4:18/Isa 61:1-2.
